Tim Walz, Governor of Minnesota, Wins Re-Election
Tim Walz, a Democratic politician, has secured a second term as Governor of Minnesota.
Walz, a Nebraska-born politician, has served as Governor since 2018 and is considered a frontrunner for the Vice Presidential nomination.
Timothy James Walz (born April 6, 1964) is an American politician who has served as the 41st and current Governor of Minnesota since 2018. He was first elected in 2018 and won re-election in 2022.
Walz is a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), the Minnesota affiliate of the Democratic Party, and is considered a moderate Democrat. He is a retired U.S. Army National Guard command sergeant major and former high school teacher and coach. Walz was born in Nebraska and raised in South Dakota. He attended Chadron State College in Nebraska and received a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education with an emphasis on social studies in 1989. Walz served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1981 to 2005, retiring as a command sergeant major. He was deployed to Kuwait during the Gulf War from 1990 to 1991.
Walz was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2006. He served four terms in the House, representing District 21A, which includes parts of Mankato and North Mankato. In 2014, Walz was elected to his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Minnesota's 1st congressional district. He served one term in the House, from 2015 to 2019.
Walz was elected Governor of Minnesota in 2018, defeating Republican nominee Jeff Johnson. He won re-election in 2022, defeating Republican nominee Scott Jensen. Walz is married to Gwen Walz, and they have two children. The family resides in St. Paul, Minnesota.
